Formerly Homeless Man to Start this Year’s RACE FOR HOME 5K/10K & 1 Mile Walk Doug Carter is no stranger to homelessness in St. Louis, nor to life along the Mississippi river on the north side of downtown. An alumnus of Peter & Paul Community Services, Doug now lives in his own apartment but for well over a year he slept “out” in an abandoned building along the riverfront. This Saturday Doug will return to the area he called home for over 12 months when he participates in this Saturday’s RACE FOR HOME, a 5K/10K 1 Mile Run/Walk to benefit Peter & Paul Community Services’ work with those who are homeless. In fact, Doug will address this year’s participants and start this year’s race. Before coming to Peter & Paul Community Services, Carter was homeless for several years. He had spent time in shelters, as well as, transitional housing programs but was unable to find work to support himself. While at Peter & Paul Community Services Carter got involved with the agency’s street soccer team which helped him stay motivated and hopeful. After a brief stay in the hospital over complications involving diabetes, Doug finally got the break he needed, a maintenance job at a local north side organization and an apartment to call his own. On Saturday, over 200 runners and walkers will mark Homeless Awareness Month by participating in RACE FOR HOME. Now in its 5th year, RACE FOR HOME has steadily grown and is expected to raise over $10,000 to support Peter & Paul Community Services’ 5 programs. About Peter & Paul Community Services For the past 28 years, Peter & Paul Community Services has provided housing and supportive services to those who are homeless, especially those who experience mental illness or live with HIV. 5 programs include an emergency shelter, a meals program and 3 transitional housing facilities that reach thousands of people like Doug each year. Date: Saturday, November 7, 2009 Time: 8:00 a.m. Cost: $20 Venue: 21 O’Fallon Street Registration: www.raceforhome.org or on race day
